Sarah West works with different types of surfaces, combining old papers and manuscripts with her own painting, reworking and breathing new life into papers forgotten or put aside, combining them with newly painted surfaces.
Small mosaics deliver bright worlds of tiny hand painted individual squares and colours,
carefully balanced into compositions – as individual pieces or scaled up into sets for larger compositions.
The mosaic is a repeated theme in Sarah’s work as the smaller images, complete in themselves, are given new and different emphasis when presented in carefully balanced groups or sets.
Black watercolours are spontaneous and dramatic, evoking empty, romantic landscapes and far horizons. The larger tile compositions stir memories of forgotten interiors, lost letters, echoes of music, faded tiles and brocade drapes, worn and nostalgic, but tranquil and calming.
